About Me and My Journey to Zero-Waste

how to make zero-waste work for you

Welcome to my Blog: Jar Half Full! Like the name suggests I try to take a more positive approach to zero-waste and show how to make living with less waste both accessible and sustainable for you.

Over the past several years I have made goals for myself to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Despite being an avid recycler in college, it was always easy for me to say I would go zero-waste once I moved to a big city and got a real adult-job.

So in 2020 when I moved to Philadelphia and got a real adult-job I was surprised to find it wasn't easier at all. There are no refill stores near me, farmer's markets aren't open year-round, and to my disappointment I was left shopping at Walmart every week for groceries. Every zero-waste blogger I've seen  has these resources near them, so I didn't feel it was attainable for me. But recently I realized I could make living zero-waste work with what I had near me, and I want to document that journey here for anyone else who may want to reduce their waste but doesn't know how to with the resources near them.

I hope you find my posts helpful regardless of where you live in the world. And whether you plan to make a few small changes, or change your whole lifestyle, I hope you will join me on this journey!

Fast fashion is a recent buzzword that comes up often when discussing the environment. But essentially it is inexpensive clothing that is mass produced and designed to only last you one or two seasons before falling apart. Think of shopping at a mall and you'll get the idea of what is meant by fast fashion.

Fast fashion is detrimental to the environment because it produces clothing that will end up in a landfill within a few years as people continue to repurchase new replacement items. One huge thing you can do to help our planet is cut out fast fashion from your lifestyle. For many of us, thrifting is the most accessible way to do this. However, there is a downside to thrifting and its recent popularity. Thrifting can hurt poor communities who rely on thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army for all of their clothing.

ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Beni, and I've cared about the environment as long as I can remember. I've always been an avid recycler, and in 2019 I officially gave up fast-fashion after learning about how harmful it is to the environment. In 2020 I made as many sustainable zero-waste swaps as I could find and started composting! My goal for 2021 now is to work towards reducing my waste in any way I can. I will document my journey here on this blog for anyone else who wants to join the effort to live a more sustainable life.
