Zero Waste Essentials at Target

One thing that makes going zero waste difficult is that it seems just about every product that's zero waste you need to buy online. And when you're used to being able to pick up some toothpaste or deodorant on your weekly grocery run it can be really frustrating to change to ordering everything online. Not to mention the cost of shipping, extra carbon emissions to ship something to your door, more packaging, etc. This is why I'm super happy to see that Target is starting to have a lot of zero waste options in their stores. And not just something that happens to be no waste or low waste either but products that zero wasters constantly rave about.

I had a few gift cards to Target after my birthday so I went to take a look at what they currently had to see if I could save myself a few online orders. It's probably been 4 months since I was last at Target so seeing all the new stuff they had was really exciting!

This is what I got at Target (& some things I had bought at Target back in December as well):
  1. Hey Humans Toothpaste: so far I've tried two zero waste toothpaste options. One was a natural toothpaste in a jar and it doesn't taste good at all so after I use it I brush my teeth with a normal tooth paste (kinda defeats the purpose), I also tried some toothpaste tabs and while they were okay I didn't love the texture of them. This toothpaste comes in a completely recyclable aluminum bottle (you have to wash it out before putting it in your single stream recycling), and unlike the similar David's Toothpaste Hey Humans has fluoride in their toothpaste which makes me feel so much better!
  2. Native Deodorant: Native is a huge natural deodorant brand that recently came out with an entirely plastic free deodorant bottle. I've been dying to try their plastic free tube but every store that carries Native only has the plastic bottles. I had all but resorted to placing an order online when I walked through the deodorant aisle at Target and saw they had the plastic free option! And not only that but it was almost entirely out of stock. There was only one scent left and about 10 tubes of it, all around the other display shelves were completely empty so I'm glad to see they're getting so much attention! (Also, Hey Humans had a plastic free deodorant option as well if you've already tried Native's and didn't like it).
  3. Razors: Okay there are a few options here. I came because I wanted to get a razor with a reusable handle and blades that you can just switch out. Similar to the safety razor concept but honestly a lot cheaper of an option. Target had a selection of safety razors (linked is the one Kyle actually ended up buying) if that's something you would prefer. When I was looking at razors I was pleasantly surprised to find this Planet Kind one from Gillette. This is the exact thing I was looking for and the handle was made from recycled water bottles which is awesome. Plus it was only $10 and came with 2 razors, a 4 pack of razor refills for this was only $10 as well. Honestly with razors being so expensive I think that this option isn't even more expensive than buying disposable razors too.
  4. Colgate Swish Mouthwash: I'm not personally very big into mouthwash but if you use it check out this one at target that comes in an aluminum bottle! It can be infinitely recycled which is awesome, and not to be weird but if I used this I would honestly wash it out and use it as a travel water bottle.
  5. Pela Phone Case: My Otter Box phone case is still going strong but if it ever breaks I'm coming straight to Target to buy this phone case. These cases are completely biodegradable and come in a variety of colors so everyone could find something to love!
  6. Bars: Target also carries shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bars that are completely zero waste too! I have yet to try these out but I've heard people say great things about them.
  7. Soap/Hand Sanitizer: Another awesome find at Target is liquid soap, body wash and hand sanitizer in aluminum packaging as well. I couldn't find an online link for the hand sanitizer but I keep it in my car and it honestly smells great!
  8. Stasher Bags: I love my silicone Stasher bags that I've replaced disposable ziplock baggies with and I love that Target keeps them in stock too!

What other zero waste items have you found at Target? I would love to know! I definitely plan on trying to come here more often to buy my essentials vs. ordering everything separately online.
